Two New Inclusive Recreation Programs being offered by UNM-CDD

The Center for Development and Disability is excited to announce two new, upcoming programs!

DRUM BEAT (partnered with the UNM-CDD)
The Center for Development and Disability’s Autism Program is excited to promote a new inclusive recreational program, Drumbeat. This 10-week session uses African drums and other percussive instruments to ‘build resilience through rhythm.’ Drumbeat aims to cultivate a welcoming and adaptive drumming community; to teach rhythm and improvisation; encourage self-expression; provide a supported social experience and promote musical exploration.
Classes will be facilitated by Stef Graner & Nick Bonney. Both Stef and Nick have experience volunteering at Camp Rising Sun; leading inclusive music programs; and working at Very Special Arts. Classes are open to adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) aged 12 and older. The ten-week series will be offered weekly on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30pm at Zendo (412 2nd St. SW) starting Wednesday, September 18th. Class size is limited to ten drummers.

LIL KICKERS: INCLUSIVE INDOOR SOCCER (Independent Community program)
Lil’ Kickers, is announcing the inception of a new program: Full-Spectrum Soccer, a 12-week soccer program designed specifically to support those with ASD. Full Spectrum Soccer is open to individuals between the ages of 4 and 5 years; class size is limited to 7 individuals to permit optimal support and coach:player ratio. Lil Kickers’ program is built on developmental theory and aims to cultivate skills sets within the child while providing a fun, encouraging social and physically engaging opportunity.
Classes will be taught by Jeremiah Pena, director of Lil’ Kickers soccer program and Montessori School teacher; and Kate Messier. Kate brings several years experience volunteering in various inclusive recreation programs, Child Find classrooms and is an avid soccer player. Jeremiah brings several years of teaching experience, his knowledge and passion for adaptive instruction and the belief that all can succeed with the appropriate challenge.
COME TO AN OPEN HOUSE & check it out before you sign up: September 14th from 12:30-1:30pm. Classes will officially begin Wednesday, September 18th and run from 2:45 – 3:30pm. Thereafter, classes will be held on a weekly basis for 12 weeks. Classes will be held at the International Indoor Soccer Arena, 1311 Cuesta Arriba Ct NE, Albuquerque, NM 87113.
